The Washing Machine We'd Buy Our Own Family
Not the cheapest. Not the trendiest. The one that's still running flawlessly in 15 years - based on what we actually see fail in the field.
Bosch Series 6
WGG Series, 9kg, 1400rpm
Richard and Paul have repaired appliances across Colchester and Essex since 2001. The Bosch Series 6 comes back for repairs far, far less often than budget alternatives. When it does, parts are available and the repair is worth doing.

Buy Right First Time
A Beko looks cheaper on the shelf. But over 15 years, most people buy two - and still end up with an inferior appliance. Here's the honest maths.
Budget Route - Buy Twice
Bosch Series 6 - Buy Once

Pricing based on typical UK retail 2025. Energy cost at 29p/kWh. Disposal estimate for council bulky item collection. Your actual costs may vary.
The Ecological Case for Buying Better
A new washing machine costs the planet roughly 200–250 kg CO₂ to manufacture. Buying twice isn't just expensive - it doubles that footprint.
Half the Manufacturing Carbon
One Bosch Series 6, carefully maintained, replaces two budget machines. That's one manufacturing cycle instead of two - saving roughly 200–240 kg CO₂ before you've done a single wash.
A-Rated Efficiency Every Wash
Rated A on the UK/EU energy label, the Series 6 uses approximately 52 kWh per 100 cycles. A C-rated budget machine uses 20–30% more - that adds up to 50+ kWh extra per year across a family's usage.
Less Landfill
Old washing machines often end up in landfill even when they shouldn't. One well-built machine that lasts 20 years means one less appliance - and its steel drum, motor and stainless parts - entering the waste stream.
Richard's note: "Repairing appliances since 2001, I've seen the same pattern. People buy cheap, replace at year 6 or 7, buy cheap again, replace again - and by year 15 they've spent more than a Bosch Series 6 would have cost, wasted two machines, and had two rounds of disruption. The Bosch EcoSilence Drive motor has no carbon brushes to wear - that's the single biggest reason it outlasts everything else in its class. If you look after it, it will outlast the kitchen."
Why the Bosch Series 6 Outlasts the Rest
This isn't marketing. These are the specific engineering reasons we see fewer Bosch Series 6 call-outs than any comparable budget machine.
- EcoSilence Drive™ brushless motor - No carbon brushes means the #1 failure point in budget machines simply doesn't exist. Bosch warranties this motor for 10 years. Budget machines use carbon brush motors that wear from day one.
- Stainless steel drum - Resists rusting and retains structural integrity over decades. Budget machines often use plastic-composite drums that degrade over time.
- i-DOS automatic dosing (higher spec models) - Measures and dispenses exactly the right detergent dose. Overdosing is one of the most common causes of drum seal failure, residue blockage and mould - it's eliminated entirely.
- ActiveWater Plus - Sensors measure the actual load and adjust water use accordingly. Less mechanical stress per cycle because the drum isn't needlessly overworked on small loads.
- German-engineered tolerances - Tighter manufacturing tolerances mean less vibration, less bearing wear, and quieter running throughout the machine's life.
- Parts availability - When a Bosch Series 6 does need a repair (and they do occasionally), parts are available and affordable. We can fix them properly. Some budget brands become impossible to source parts for within 5 years.
5 Things That Will Keep It Running for 20 Years
The Bosch Series 6 is built to last - but how you use it matters. These are the care habits our engineers recommend to every customer.
Excess detergent is the single biggest cause of drum seal failure and mould build-up. Follow the dosing guide precisely or choose a Series 6 with i-DOS and let the machine do it automatically.
A dedicated maintenance wash at 60°C (without laundry) kills bacteria and clears detergent residue from the drum, seals and pipes before it builds into a blockage or mould colony.
The pump filter catches debris that would otherwise damage the pump impeller. It takes two minutes to clean - and prevents the most common avoidable call-out we attend.
Moisture trapped in the drum and detergent drawer breeds mould. Leaving both open for 30 minutes after a cycle costs nothing and prevents the seals degrading prematurely.
The difference between a proportionate repair and replacing the appliance prematurely is usually how long the fault was left running. A new noise, vibration or error code on a Bosch is almost always cheap to fix early. Left alone, secondary damage is the expensive part.
Buy the Bosch Series 6. Buy it Once.
At roughly £699–£849 it's more than a budget machine. But it's the last washing machine most people will ever need to buy. Two budget machines over the same period cost more, produce more waste, and give you years of lower reliability in between. For the household that wants to buy right, wash efficiently, and never want to think about the washing machine again - this is the answer.
