- Heat pump technology runs cooler - Conventional dryers use a heating element that cycles on and off at high temperatures. Heat pump dryers run at lower, consistent temperatures - which is gentler on clothes, gentler on drum seals, and gentler on the machine's own internal components. Lower operating temperature means longer component life.
- Stainless steel drum - Resists corrosion, retains structural integrity, and won't harbour odours over time. Budget dryers frequently use plastic-composite drums that can warp or degrade over time under repeated heat cycling.

Tumble dryers are involved in a significant proportion of domestic appliance fires in the UK. Most are preventable. Here's what you need to know.

- Clean the lint filter after every single cycle - Lint accumulation is the primary fire risk in tumble dryers. The filter should be cleared before or after every use. If you do nothing else on this list, do this.
- Never leave a running dryer unattended or run it overnight - If a fault develops during a cycle, you need to be able to respond immediately. Dryer fires spread very fast. Never run the machine while sleeping or out of the house.
- Check your dryer against the recall register - Between 2015 and 2020, multiple manufacturers (including Whirlpool/Hotpoint/Indesit) issued recalls for fire-risk dryers. Check your model at gov.uk/product-safety-database before using an older machine.
- Don't dry items that have been in contact with flammable substances - Oil, petrol, paint thinners, cleaning products. Even after washing, residues can remain. Air-dry these items instead.
- Check the condenser unit annually on condenser and heat pump models - Lint can bypass the filter and collect on the condenser over time. An annual clean of the condenser unit (most slide out for cleaning) prevents heat build-up.
5 Habits That Will Keep It Running for 15 Years
A clogged lint filter restricts airflow, forces the machine to work harder, raises internal temperature, and creates a fire risk. Thirty seconds after every cycle keeps this the machine running efficiently and safely.
On heat pump and condenser models, the heat exchanger (usually accessed via a panel at the bottom front) collects lint that bypasses the filter. On models without SelfCleaning Condenser, remove and rinse this unit regularly. On models with SelfCleaning Condenser, check it annually.
An overloaded drum puts mechanical strain on the belt, drum bearings and motor. The laundry also doesn't dry properly - items in the middle of a packed load can remain damp. Load to around 80% capacity for efficient, gentle drying.
The door gasket creates the airtight seal that keeps heat inside the drum. A cracked or deformed seal allows heat and moisture to escape, reducing efficiency and stressing the heating system. Replace it at the first sign of cracking - it's an inexpensive part.
A burning smell during operation means either lint has reached a hot component, a belt is slipping, or a heating element is failing. Stop the cycle, remove the load, and don't use the machine again until it has been inspected. This is not a fault to run through.
